SJCRC Youth Ministry Mission Statement and Programs

Mission Statement:

Our youth ministries exist to...
 Transform, Equip, and Impact.

First, we exist for lives to be transformed from the dark of this world to the light of Christ.

Second, we exist to equip each student with the tools to live a life reflecting their choice to serve God.

And third, we exist to use those tools to go back out and impact other lives so that they, too, may begin the process.

These three things span a lifetime: not a singular moment in the Christian life, but an ongoing process in which we live.  Our goal is to teach these principles to the students, that they may reflect God's light in this world.

Ministry Programs:

Our ministries to youth are divided into two age groups:  "JJs" for students in jr. high, and "Sonlife" for students in high school.  Each group has regular classes, Bible studies, and outings.  Currently JJs and Sonlife meet for Sunday School at 11am (after our morning worship service).  Sonlife also meets for prayer and worship each Sunday evening at 6pm.  JJs had been meeting for the past several years twice a month on Wednesday evenings.  Recently that mid-week program has taken a break as we look for ways to “re-invent” our JJs to better serve our younger teens.  We also try to provide one fun outing each month for both age groups.  Sometimes that outing or event involves both age groups together.  Regular service projects are also planned.

Since we are eager to grow our youth groups spiritually and numerically, we look to expand our ministry to include more opportunities to contact and engage our own youth and to help our students to reach out to other teens.  Some programs that have worked well in the past include:  1)“The Bridge”-a youth worship service planned and led largely by the kids, 2)“The Revolution”- a Saturday evening open-house style fun night designed to attract kids with little or no church background, 3) Volleyball and Basketball Tournaments hosted by the youth but involving the entire church family and friends, and 4) small group Bible studies (boys and girls separately).  We recognize that working with youth is a very dynamic process; therefore we encourage and support creativity in planning!

Our Kids:

Current numbers: JJs- 7, Sonlife- 24.  These are children of members, or kids who regularly attend our church.  Our students attend several different schools, both public and private.  Although our students are quite spread out geographically, close ties are maintained and good friendships are evident.

San Jose, located south of San Francisco, is the heart of “Silicon Valley”.  Our kids are smart, tech-savvy, and wise in the ways of popular culture.  They are fun-loving, inquisitive, thoughtful, and ready to be engaged in God’s Kingdom.  We believe that God will provide the right person for this job!
